Music Review - Flowers on the Battlefield by WLM

Flowers on the Battlefield

Have you ever felt like love is a battle? Has love ever felt like a fight that must go on as long as the love exists? Sometimes it’s you and your partner against the world, but sometimes it’s both of you against each other. If you’ve ever felt that way, you can find a kindred spirit in this indie band called Winner Life Music.

Everyone who’s ever been in love knows this feeling, myself included. Love often does feel like a battle, and WLM captured that sentiment spectacularly in their song, Flowers on the Battlefield. The song starts with drums like it’s a throwback to Drumline, then fades into soft music. In this song, WLM explained that love felt like a war between them and their partner.

That sounds ironic at first, but I think about it, it’s entirely possible. Love is like a war, and you’re either in it together or against each other. The funny thing is, even after fighting against each other, the love never really goes away. WLM refers to this as flowers on the battlefield. So it’s a war, but for some reason, the love never fully goes away.

This is the most striking part of the song for me...

Even though we’re breaking up, I pledge allegiance to our love.

Just know that my heart still beats for you

There’s no chance of making up,

Just know that my love still lives for you.

WLM completely understands that a battlefield is no place for love to thrive, so there’s no chance of getting back together. That said, they also understand that the love will never go away, hence the flowers on the battlefield. It’s beautiful, poetic, and completely relatable.

My major takeaway is that we must understand the difference between how we feel and what we need to do. Love all you want, but if there’s no proper environment for that love to blossom, if you’re fighting against each other instead of for each other, it’s time to say goodbye.

Enjoy the song for yourself here, and feel free to check out Winners Life Music for more music.
